Wickenburg--Services will be held at Wickenburg Mortuary at 2pm Saturday for Robert A Williams, an Arizona pioneer who died Monday at Wickenburg Hospital.
He was 89.
Mr Williams was born in Snowflake and traveled with his family through dangerous Apache country between Snowflake and Tempe in 1891. Eight years later he got a job as a stagecoach driver on a run that wound through Walker, Bumble Bee and Gillette.
In 1906, Mr Williams drove a stagecoach from Mesa to Roosevelt, earning $60 a month for the 61-mile run, usually made in 10 hours.
In an interview in 1966, he recalled that the only time he was held up had been by a ranger, who charged that whisky was being brought in on Williams' stage.
"It was," he said. "And it was on the passengers, their baggage and express. But it wasn't up to me to frisk them."
Mr Williams eventually switched to mining jobs in Arizona and Utah. He settled in mountainous country near Morristown.
For several years, Mr Williams had been a regular at annual pioneer reunions sponsored by The Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette.
He is survived by five daughters, Mrs Murle Hicks, Pacific Palisades, Calif; Mrs Pearl Cunningham and Mrs Blance Henrichsen, both of Salt Lake City; Mrs Marie Marshall of Las Vegas, and Mrs Connie Allen of Gilbert. A sister, LaVerna Rice of Mesa, also survives.
